Katalin Horvath

* Naszvad, October 22, 1944 – / linguist, associate professor ; ; His family was resettled in Hungary in 1947. He graduated from the Radnóti Miklós Gyakorló Gymnasium in Budapest in 1963. From 1964 he was a student of the Hungarian-library department at the ELTE BTK. Later, instead of the library department, he took up the special department of general and applied linguistics and in 1970 he obtained a diploma as a teacher of Hungarian language and literature and a lecturer in general and applied linguistics. Initially, he worked in a daycare center of an elementary school, then in 1971–1972 he was employed at the State Gorkij Library. Between 1973–1978 he was a Hungarian teacher at the Katona József Secondary School in Budapest’s 13th district. In 1978, he became a scientific fellow and then a doctoral student at the Department of General and Applied Linguistics of ELTE. From 1979, he was a lecturer at the Department of General and Applied Linguistics of ELTE (1979–1982: assistant professor, 1982–1995: assistant professor, from 1995 associate professor). Between 2000–2003, he contributed to the founding and management of the Department of Hungarian Linguistics of the Pannonian University of Veszprém. From 2006, he was an associate professor at the Department of Hungarian Linguistics of the University of Miskolc. In his doctoral dissertation Transformational Groups in Hungarian (1983), he conducted a multi-aspect (etymological, morphological, syntactic and semantic) analysis of the verbs that form transformational groups in modern Hungarian. His most important research topics are trope theory, name theory and etymology, as well as the questions of the relationship between synchrony and diachrony, syntax and semantics, sentence theory and sentence history. In his PhD thesis entitled The role of the part–whole relationship in the functioning of language (1994), he attempted to prove that the various part–whole relations that play a role in language have a fundamental role in both the two main types of nomination (original and metaphorical designation) and the creation and functioning of the three central tropes (synecdoché, metonymy and metaphor). He deals with Esperanto and was also a member of the thematic committee that undertook the task of further training secondary school Hungarian teachers and the renewal of secondary school mother tongue training. In addition to the two books mentioned, he has published about 60 theses, and his lectures at various professional conferences have been published in volumes of studies. On the occasion of his 60th birthday, his colleagues and former students published a volume of linguistic and literary studies entitled “…even from there to beyond…” (2004).
