Joseph Holub

* Alsókubin, April 4, 1885 – † Pécs, March 28, 1962 / historian, legal historian, university professor, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences ; ; His father was a middle school teacher and got a job in Szekszárd, so his son started his studies there and graduated there. ; He earned a teaching certificate in history and Latin at the University of Budapest in 1908. Between 1909 and 1923, he was the keeper of the manuscript collection of the Hungarian National Museum, while in 1920 he also earned a doctorate in political science and became a private tutor in diplomacy. The Saint Stephen Academy also elected him a member, and in 1923 he was appointed an extraordinary professor of the Hungarian history department of the Elizabeth University of Pécs, and a year later he became a regular professor. In 1929–1930 he served as dean of the Faculty of Humanities. Between 1938–1949 he was a professor of the Faculty of Law and Political Science, and in the meantime its dean (1943–1944) and rector (1944–1945). He was a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences from 1923 and a full member from 1945. In 1949 he was stripped of his full academic membership and demoted to a “consulting” member. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences rehabilitated him in 1989.
