He studied at the Vienna University of Technology and the Selmecbánya Mining Academy (1858–1863). He began his practical work at the Szélakna Mechanical Inspectorate in 1863. From 1856 he was an assistant professor at the Leoben Mining Academy, from 1868 he was an assistant professor at the Selmecbánya Academy, from 1872 he was an extraordinary professor, and from 1884 to 1892 he was a regular professor of analytical power engineering and solids. In 1894 he became chief mining advisor. He is known for his significant literary work covering the fields of thermodynamics of gases, mechanics and solids.
