He started high school in Szombathely, studied philosophy in Pest, then joined the army in 1848 and served as an artilleryman. After Vílagos, he was imprisoned, and after his release, he entered the priesthood, was ordained a priest in 1855, earned a doctorate in theology in 1856, and traveled to Palestine as a proselytizer in 1857–1860. Upon his return home, he taught at the Esztergom seminary. From 1861, he was a professor of theology in Budapest, and from 1873–1905, until his retirement, he was a professor of Semitic languages at the Faculty of Humanities. In 1874 he left his church and converted to the Unitarian religion.
