Charles Hadaly

* Gúta, 1743 – † Pest, July 19, 1834 / mathematician, university professor ; ; Born in Nagysziget, which now belongs to Gúta. (In his bibliographic summary, József Szinnyei's Life and Works of Hungarian Writers, he indicates Nagysziget in Somogy County as his place of birth, as does the Great Encyclopedia of Révai, so it is an open question as to which locality he was born in. However, based on his biographical data, his origin in Gúta seems more likely.) He studied philosophy and law at the University of Nagyszombat, and then worked as a royal notary under the Archbishop and Cardinal of Esztergom, József Batthyány. Later, he became a professor of higher mathematics at the University of Nagyszombat, which was transferred to Buda in 1777, while Károly Hadaly remained in Nagyszombat and taught philosophy at the Academy. In 1781 he became a mathematics teacher at the Academy of Győr. When the Győr institution was moved to Pécs in 1785, Hadaly moved there too, but in 1786 he took up a job teaching mathematics at the Academy of Bratislava. In 1810 he was appointed professor of mathematics and physics at the Institutum Geometricum engineering university in Pest, where he taught until his retirement in 1831. In 1801 he was elected a member of the Göttingen Scientific Society.
