He was the mine director of the Austro-Hungarian State Railway Company. He developed the modernization plan for the company's coal mines. In Hungary, he was the first to use concrete for mine protection and to use electricity to remove mine water. After his retirement (1910), he worked as an expert. He discovered the bauxite deposit in Halimba (Veszprém County). His younger brother, György (Gschwandtner) Gusztáv (Aknaszlatina, May 23, 1864 – Budapest, January 15, 1919), was a metallurgical engineer who also graduated from Selmecbánya and was István Schenek's assistant at the department of general and elemental chemistry between 1887 and 1891. ; ; His main works: ; Quantitative analytical chemistry with special regard to the analyses occurring in metal and iron smelting laboratories, 1894 (second, expanded edition: 1907).
