He began his teaching career in Nyíregyháza, and then worked as an art teacher at the Catholic High School in Rozsnyó until 1896. In the meantime, he also worked on the excavation of the wall paintings of the medieval churches around Rozsnyó. He also involved his students in the work. He married in Rozsnyó, and his wife was Anna Hénesz, the daughter of the local master builder András Hénesz. From 1896 to 1926, until his retirement, he was a teacher at the Academy of Applied Arts in Budapest, and was its director between 1917 and 1926. He also conducted art history research and restoration work, especially the restoration and conservation of medieval churches and monuments in Hungary, and the copying of wall paintings of cultural historical value (his 160-page collection is the property of the National Monuments Inspectorate). In 1908, he uncovered new frescoes under the layers of lime and plaster in the medieval church of Csetnek. He conducted research and restoration work in several other Gömör settlements (Ochtina, Gecelfalva, Süvete, Gömörrákos). In 1901, he restored the sgraffito decoration of the Rákóczi house in Prešov with his students and prepared the restoration plan for the Renaissance-era Thurzó house in Levoča.
