She is the daughter of Mihály Greisiger, a doctor, and the wife of István Győrffy, a professor of botany. She began her schooling in her hometown, graduating from the high school in Késmárk. She was the first female student of natural history at the University of Cluj-Napoca, and in 1904 she obtained a teaching certificate in mathematics and natural history. She and her husband met at the university and taught first (between 1904 and 1909) in Makó, and then (between 1909 and 1913) at the high school in Levoča. During these years, they lived in Szepesbéla. In 1913, Győrffy was appointed professor at the University of Cluj-Napoca and the family moved to the Transylvanian city. They lived there until the end of World War I, after which they settled in Szeged. In 1940, they moved back to Cluj-Napoca and by then she was already participating in her husband's research as a colleague. Between 1920 and 1942, they often visited the High Tatras during their summer holidays, where they studied the high-mountain flora. In her younger years, she often climbed the peaks of the High Tatras.
