* Prešov, 13 August 1754 – † Prešov, 22 November 1813 / pharmacist, pioneer of sugar production in Hungary ; ; After completing his elementary school studies, he worked in a pharmacy in Késmárk until 1776, then studied pharmacy at the University of Buda and received a pharmacist's diploma in 1780. Reading foreign scientific papers, he began to deal more deeply with the issues of beet sugar production. He first tried processing dry beet slices made from his own white turnips, but this did not bring the expected results, so he switched to the Achard method28 and reported on the results in a newspaper in 1804. ; However, the authorities did not support his application to establish a sugar factory, so in 1811 he embarked on the venture on his own. The first sugar samples produced in this way finally convinced the authorities and allowed the construction of the factory, but Gertinger soon passed away, so the further chapters of domestic sugar production were written by others.
