* Levoca, October 17, 1770 – † Vienna, March 20, 1814 / historian ; ; Son of Jakab Engel, younger brother of János Jakab Engel. He graduated from the Evangelical Gymnasium in his hometown, where he also learned French, and then studied philosophy, mathematics, history and theology as a student of the Bratislava Lyceum. In 1788 he enrolled at the University of Göttingen, where he studied classical philology, history, statistics, political science and diplomacy from well-known scholars of the time. He also spoke Italian and English. In 1791 he came to Vienna, where he was a draftsman of the Transylvanian Chancellery, from 1794 an imperial and royal auditor, from 1801 an advisor for Protestant legal affairs, and from 1812 a secretary. He was honored with membership in the learned societies of Göttingen, Prague, Munich and Warsaw. In the last years of his life, he fell ill frequently, and in 1813 he was treated for months in the cold sulphurous waters of the Koronahegyifürdő (or Vörösklostor-fürdő, Smerdzonka) near Alsólehnic, rich in glauber salt. In addition to his official work, he was primarily concerned with the history, political relations, geography and laws of Hungary, as well as issues of the Hungarian and Slavic languages, theology, pedagogy and classical philology.
