The picture shows the young brides receiving their first communion in 1945, immediately after World War II. Many of them had not yet returned home from the front or had been taken prisoner. Some, as war orphans, experienced this exalting moment when they were able to receive the body of Jesus Christ in the form of bread for the first time.
