The deportation of Bishop István Cseri

Several hundred people were deported from Nagymegyer to Hungary between May 12 and December 13, 1948. According to historian Katalin Vadkerty, 205 families were deported from the settlement between May and December 1948. Of these, 83 families owned 769 hectares of land in their hometown. Katalin Vadkerty did not provide data on how many members of the 205 families left Nagymegyer. Tibor Tánczos, in his work published in 1996, refers to “a total of 90 families and approximately 437 people were deported.” The reported number was probably much higher! The destinations included: Mezőmegyer (16 families), Gerendás (13), Elek (8), Csorvás (3), Mezőberény (6), Mágócs (2), Újkígyós (1), Békéscsaba (16), Körösladány (1), Drávaszabolcs (1), Németpalkonya (5). ; On October 19, 1948, the parish priest István Cseri, whom the authorities did not forgive for visiting his followers deported to the Czech Republic in the summer of 1947, left Nagymegyer.
