John Csaplovics

* Fehérkút, September 21, 1780 – † Vienna, May 29, 1847 / lawyer, estate manager, cultural historian ; ; He was an intellectual of Slovak origin, but who wrote mostly in Latin, German and Hungarian. After completing his school studies, he became a law trainee in Banská Bystrica in 1804, and obtained his law degree in 1805. His patron, Lord Péter Balogh, took him to Vienna, where he worked for a few years in the Hungarian royal court chancellery. In 1809–1813, he was a lawyer and secretary of the Greek Catholic bishopric in Pakrác in Slavonia, and from 1813, he was the economic advisor to Count Fülöp Schönborn, and the director of the Munkács majorate estate. He lived in Vienna for most of his life, and was a member of the Vienna economic and Halle natural history societies. He was elected as a judge of the board of Zólyom, Máramaros and Ugocsa counties. He wrote books on politics, political history, economic and cultural history, and in 1821 he published and edited the collection work Topographic-statistical Archive of the Kingdom of Hungary. He also wrote criticisms, humorous stories, legal, geographical, statistical and economic articles. ; Among these, it is worth mentioning, for example, On Hungarian pharmacies, Ethnographic treatise on Hungary, Czech antiquities, Hungarian vendus ponds, On the press and freedom of speech, Data on Hungarian game scenes, Doubts about historiography, On scholars and academies, The Hungarian scholarly society, etc. He argued fiercely about the academy with Antal Vállas and Gusztáv Szontágh, rejecting its necessity.
