Benedicti M. Lőrinc

* Nedozser, 10 August 1555 – † Prague, 4 June 1615 / humanist poet, ; teacher, mathematician, linguist, musician, university professor ; ; He is believed to be of Slovak origin, but his works were written in Latin and Czech. He began his schooling in Privigen, but after the death of his father, at the age of 10, he was sent to Iglau on the Czech-Moravian border, where his uncle lived. During his student years, he fell seriously ill and was unable to continue his schooling for a long time. His health only recovered in 1587, and then he became a student at Charles University in Prague, where he studied philosophy and theology. From 1593, he was a teacher and rector of the Moravian Budějovice Lyceum, and then between 1595 and 1597 he studied again in Prague and obtained a baccalaureate in the subject of military art. He received his doctorate in philosophy on July 4, 1600. In 1602–1603, he was a teacher at the upper private school in Németbród. In 1604, he was admitted to the faculty of Charles University, where he taught classical philology, mathematics, and physics until his death. His death was caused by pneumonia. The church in Prague where he was laid to rest no longer exists. His memory is preserved by a plaque in his native village and a local school bearing his name. Linguistics occupies an important place in his diverse literary work: he wrote the first Czech grammar. He advocated the application of the principle of scientificity in education. He wrote numerous mathematical textbooks and reading books, as well as occasional poems.
