From 1876 he was a teacher of history and geography at the Sopron Realist School. He conducted excavations at Purgstal near Sopron, on the Károly Heights and around Balfürdő. After his retirement, he worked in the MNM Antiquities Museum for 12 years. He was one of the initiators of domestic archaeological cave research. In addition to the excavation of numerous Roman-era finds, in 1920 he conducted excavations in the Copper Age cemetery in Bodrogkeresztúr. In addition to naming the Bükk culture, Lajos Bella is associated with archaeological excavations in the Miskolc area and Hungarian speleology in general through his summary reports on Paleolithic research, his excavations in the Ottó Herman Cave together with Ottokár Kadić, and his position as vice-president (1913) and later president (1917) of the Cave Research Department. The Scythian deer found during the excavations in Tápiószentgyörgy (1923) became the emblem of the Hungarian Life Movement in 1939.
