Bauer Gyzó

Érsekújvár, May 31, 1942 – / physician, pharmacologist, university professor, associate member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences ; ; He completed his primary school education in Magyarbél, graduated from the Galanta gymnasium (1959). He obtained a diploma from the Faculty of Medicine of the Comenius University in Bratislava (1965). In 1966–1971 he worked as a postgraduate student at the Institute of Pharmacology of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Prague – he obtained the degree of candidate of medical sciences in 1969 –, from 1972 he was a scientific associate at the Institute of Experimental Drug Research of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava, and its director between 1990–1999. In 1985 he became a doctor of medical sciences, in 1994 he was habilitated as an associate professor, and from 1995 he was a university professor. He is a member of several institutions and organizations: the SZTA – corresponding member (1987), full member (1998), CSTA – corresponding member (1988), the Hungarian Academy of Sciences – external member (1998). In 1990, he was also a representative of the Slovak National Council. In 1991–1996, he was the president of the Csemadok OV, and in 2003–2007, he was the ambassador of Slovakia to Turkey (Ankara). His research field is neuropharmacology. He primarily deals with the effect of various organic compounds on the transmission of impulses in smooth muscle nerves, as well as the reactions of oxygen free radicals and certain drugs produced in the body. He has published nearly 300 scientific publications (of which about 120 in foreign journals). He was a visiting researcher in several countries: Soviet Union (1974), Japan (1981-82, 1989, 1995-96, 1998-99), Great Britain (1987, 1993). Scientific awards and distinctions: Kl. Gottwald State Prize (1987), Jessenius Silver Plaque of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1992), Minority Awards (1995), Gold Medal of the President of the Republic of Hungary (2000), Pribina Cross II. degree (2001), Middle Cross of the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic (2001), Gold Plaque of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (2002), Kemény Zsigmond Prize (2003, Pro Renovanda Cultura Hungariae Foundation), Arany János Prize for Scientific Research Lifetime Achievement Award (2008).
