Antal Bartal

* Besztercebánya, April 24, 1829 – † Dunaharaszti, September 6, 1909 / classical philologist, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences ; ; Originally called Bartl, he changed this to Bartal in 1871. He trained as a theologian, but after completing his theological studies at the University of Pest and the seminary in Besztercebánya, he left the church in 1849 and obtained a Greek-Latin teaching certificate at the University of Vienna. In 1856 he was appointed a teacher at one of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences gymnasiums in Ungvár and in 1858 in Pest. Between 1871 and 1890 he was the director of the Budapest teacher training institute and the training gymnasium. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences elected him a corresponding member in 1873 and a full member in 1898. He excelled primarily as a textbook writer, publishing the Complete Latin–Hungarian Dictionary in 1864.
