* September 19, 1909 Betlér - † October 13, 1967 Rozsnyó / linguist, ethnographer, photographer, significant figure in modern Hungarian linguistics, one of the founders of Slovak dialect research ; ; He graduated from high school in Rozsnyó, studied philosophy, Hungarian and Slavic linguistics at the University of Bratislava from 1931–35. From 1935 he was the head of the Institute of Dialectology at the University of Bratislava, and at the same time he taught at the Slovak Real Gymnasium in Bratislava, then at the Bratislava Gymnasium, and at the Commercial College. From 1943-1946 he was a researcher at the Slovak Academy of Sciences. One of the leading figures of Hungarian cultural life in the Slovak State (1939–44), a member of the board of the Slovak Hungarian Cultural Association (SZMKE), head of the association's ethnographic research group (1939–1945). After losing his research position, he was an employee of József Orlovsky's publishing company (1946–1949). ; Director of the Rožňov Museum (1955–1958). ; One of the leading figures of Hungarian cultural life in Slovakia during the existence of the Slovak State, for his activities in protecting the rights of Hungarians in Slovakia (Czechoslovak Hungarian Democratic People's Association) he was sentenced to five years in prison (1949), during his prison sentence he worked in uranium mines in Western Bohemia (1949–1954). After his release, he worked as a museum director in Rozsnyó until 1958, then as a worker in Bratislava, later moving back to Rozsnyó, and at the end of his life he returned to his linguistic research. ; As a linguist, he dealt with phonology, Hungarian and Slovak dialect research, the examination of Hungarian-Slovak bilingualism, and the structural history of the linguistic antecedents of the modern Hungarian language. He also conducted ethnographic, cultural and mining history research.
