George Carpenter

* Dunaszerdahely, August 14, 1923 – / biochemist, associate member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences ; ; He obtained his general medical degree from the Budapest Medical University in 1950. He was an assistant professor at the university's biochemistry department until 1956. After the suppression of the 1956 War of Independence, he emigrated to the USA, where he worked first in Boston, then in New York as a research fellow at Rockefeller University, and then at the biochemistry department of Columbia University. In 1961–1974, he was the director of the enzymology department at the New York Institute of Muscle Diseases, in 1974–1986, he was a professor of the pediatrics and biochemistry departments at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, and since 1986, he has been a professor of biochemistry at the department of oncology. His research field is biochemical molecular biology, investigating the mechanism of protein synthesis. He discovered the unique replication cycle of retroviruses. He isolated the only genetically stable cell culture in which the hepatitis B virus reproduces. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences elected him as an external member in 1990.
