The Reformed Church of St. George in Pelsőc

Other - other

The Reformed Church of Pelsőc - we see the church we are used to every day, whose separate bell tower is a rarity in all of Europe. ; Pelsőc is located 20 km southwest of Rozsnyó, surrounded by the wonderful plateaus of the Gömör-Tornai Karst National Park. ; The early Gothic Church of St. George dates back to the 13th century. The castle of the Bebek family once stood on the site where the church stands today. In the 17th century, it was converted into a Renaissance style, with valuable furnishings and Gothic wall paintings, and is the family and funeral church of the Bebek family. ; The interesting thing about the church is the bell tower standing next to it. The exact date of the tower's first construction cannot be determined, but it is already recorded that the roof of the tower collapsed in 1621, it was rebuilt in 1748, it was repaired in 1870 and its walls were also built higher. At that time, a gilded copper sphere was placed on the top of the tower, with a crescent moon, a rooster and a star on the side. ; On September 28, 1883, a terrible storm raged over Pelsőc, which tore off the top of the tower and threw the copper sphere and the crescent moon all the way to the market area. However, it was rebuilt with donations from the faithful. The tower did not belong to the church building, but it probably also served as the city gate. On its base is a monument to the heroes of Pelsőc who fell in the First World War. ; We enter the church through the Renaissance entrance gate. ; The coat of arms of the Bebek family and Pelsőc, upon entering the church, decorates the wooden gallery. ; On the pure wooden gallery, we can also read quotations from the Old and New Testaments. ; The so-called Bebek Chapel was built in the 16th century to the north side of the church. This was also called the Knights' Hall, but it was probably a chapel where services were held. The Knights' Hall is accessed through the Gothic entrance. The Gothic windows have been preserved in the hall. The sitting room is in the late Gothic style. It is highly likely that the wall of the hall hides another sitting room. The tombstone of the royal chamberlain László Bebek can be found here. ; The church's frescoes can be seen in the Gothic part. Unfortunately, they were damaged as a result of many fires and battles. The external fresco depicts King Stephen and Prince László in knightly attire. Next to it is a fresco of a Pauline monk from Gombaszóg. The following frescoes are also worth mentioning: The Crucifixion of Jesus, The Last Supper, which are the works of Italian painters from around 1350. The Reformed symbol, the chalice, can also be seen in the Gothic part of the church. This picture is the best-preserved fresco in the church. ; A biblical quote can be seen on the wall of the pulpit. Above the pulpit we see the pelican feeding its young with its own blood. ; The Lord's Table is located in the Gothic part of the church. ; The organ is located in the east gallery of the church.
