Students of the Zárda school in Nagymegyer at the beginning of the 20th century

The school, built in 1902, was named “Saint Elzeár School”. The nuns taught. The girls studied in combined classes in the three classrooms of the building. The school board had no say in the life and management of the school. Although school attendance was compulsory, during the spring and autumn agricultural work, parents kept the more advanced children at home to help with the work. Therefore, regular teaching took place mainly in the winter months. The teaching material was the teaching material published by state offices, with a specific religious coloring. The students were equipped with a blackboard, a slate and a sponge. The photo was taken in the years after the school was founded, where, based on the countess’ decision, the teaching was carried out by the nuns of the Daughters of St. Vincent de Paul order.
