The Matthias tree in Nagymegyer

At the end of Vadász Street in Nagymegyer stands an old oak tree. According to a historical legend still alive in the city, King Matthias tied his horse to this tree and had his tent pitched when he visited Nagymegyer to investigate the complaint of the Nagymegyer people. The Nagymegyer people, who belonged to the former Megyer tribe, had special rights until 1421. They did not pay taxes except to the king. In 1421, King Sigismund exchanged his estates here with the Kanizsayas, as a result of which the feudal lords were already taxing the inhabitants of the settlement. They could not accept this, and therefore turned to the ruler, who was known as a just king, who went to Nagymegyer in disguise to investigate the complaint, was convinced of the legitimacy of the complaint, and promised to remedy it. Due to the influence of the historical legend, the oak tree was later included in the city's former and current coat of arms.
