Synagogue in Szentendre
Building, structure
The synagogue was built in 1825. Based on its stylistic features, it is likely the work of Lipót Baumhorn (Kisbér, December 28, 1860 - July 8, 1932). It was renovated in 1904, when it acquired its current form, combining Art Nouveau and Oriental elements. It was the only one in the area serving the Jewish community until 1948. From 1953, it served only as a granary, then as a warehouse for chemicals, and in the winter, pine trees were stored in it. ; About a quarter of the population of Szentendre was Jewish, but after the war and the deportations, only a fraction of them returned to the city. The building has been abandoned for decades and is a shame for the city, it is in a very poor condition, the costs of its complete reconstruction are estimated at 1.8 million euros, which Bratislava County wants to finance from external sources.
