Synagogue and Holocaust Memorial in Galanta
Building, structure
There were once two synagogues in Galánta. The first was probably built in 1758 and stood on the site of today's Mladosť shopping center. It was demolished after 1945. The construction of the new synagogue was reported in the Galántai Újság in 1898. This one was built on Új utca, later Stúr utca, where not only the synagogue was located, but also the Jewish school, rabbinical training school and kosher restaurant. The new synagogue served the Jewish community of Galánta until 1976. It was demolished then, as it certainly did not fit into the existing socialist urban concept. Today, only the designated foundations of the synagogue can be seen among the apartment buildings, where a Holocaust memorial also stands. The memorial, created by the academic sculptor Péter Szulík, was inaugurated on June 29, 2003.
