He was born in Karikáspuszta, near Zsély, which was then part of Szklabonya. He attended school in Zsély and Komárom, graduating there in 1954. For a while, he was a student at Komenský University, then taught in the countryside. In 1958-1960, he was the editor of the Hungarian broadcast of the Slovak Radio, in 1960-1963, a reporter for Új Szó, and from 1963 until its closure (until the autumn of 1994) he was an internal employee of Hét. He has been retired since 1995. He started teaching in Zsély, often returned to his parents here, and lived here with his elderly mother during his illness. ; Zs. Lajos Nagy, after his death, was laid to rest in the cemetery next to Sósári út in 2005. From 2010 to 2016, a wooden cross marked the poet's resting place. This cross was designed and made by István Bojtos, a member of the local VICTORIA Cultural Association, and the association had it erected. This headstone is now located in the west wing of the Zichy Castle, in the Museum of Local History and Ethnography, as part of a memorial exhibition on the life and work of Zs. Nagy Lajos. ; ; On October 22, 2016, the Victoria Cultural Association, the Zsélyi Nagy Lajos Civic Association and the local branch of the MKP placed a marble memorial plaque on the grave.
