Zipszer Lake – Gloserpark

At the beginning of the 20th century, there was still a lake on the site of today's Szent István (formerly Május 1.) Square, with a row of thatched houses on its northern side and a cemetery at its corner. This lake was known as Zipszer Lake from the 1890s. Its name is linked to the parliamentary elections at that time, when Dr. Náthán Zipszer, a lawyer from Dunaszerdahely and the speaker of the ruling party, wanted to campaign at the fair, but his speech did not have the desired effect: he was chased. The lawyer was forced to run away and escape his pursuers into the lake at the end of the then fair square. The name Zipszer Lake stuck to the place from this famous "running into the lake". ; Later, the lake gradually became covered in water, and at the same time became a neglected, overgrown area of the city. This unfortunate state of affairs was changed in 1936 by Judge Lajos Srenker, the city's agile chief notary, after whom the new park created with gravel sidewalks, benches, and a small playground was eventually named Gloserpark by the people of Szerdahely.
