Zemplén earthwork castle

The earthen castle was used during the time of the Hungarian conquest (and probably even before), and was later rebuilt into a stone castle in accordance with the royal decree. The castle is also mentioned by Anonymous in his Gestáj. Chroniclers have been interested in the earthen castle for a long time, according to them it was here that Árpád Zalán, the Bulgarian prince, received the envoys. The huge earthen castle was surrounded by the waters of the Bodrog. Its layout: an irregularly shaped circle with a circumference of 500 meters, the entrance of which opens towards the Bodrog. In 1220, a stone castle was already found on the site of the earthen castle. At the end of the 19th century, only a 15-meter tower remained from the castle, the stones of which were used by the locals to build the tower of the Reformed church and a granary.
The time of its destruction is unknown. According to some records, it was destroyed in the Turkish world.
