Water tower

The Komárno Water Tower is one of the most significant industrial monuments of the city, built at the beginning of the 20th century. The creation of the water tower is closely related to the development and modernization of Komárno. At the end of the 19th century, the city's water supply was not yet properly developed. The growth of the population and industrial development made it necessary to develop a modern water system. As part of this, it was decided to build a water tower. Construction began in 1901. The work progressed at a rapid pace. The tower was handed over to its intended purpose in 1902. It was designed by Elemér Zarka. He applied the modern engineering principles of the era in the design. The water tower also bears romantic stylistic features. The building played not only a functional but also an aesthetic role. The high location of the tower ensured the appropriate water pressure. A large water tank was placed inside. This enabled a continuous and even water supply. The water tower played a key role in the life of the city for a long time. Later, its importance decreased due to technological development. Despite this, it was renovated and maintained several times. Today it primarily functions as a backup system. It is also considered an important monument of industrial history and cityscape.
