The grave of Bishop József Vázsonyi

Sacral small monument

Two former recognized figures of public life, József Haskó (1828–1901) and József Vázsonyi (1847–1923), Catholic parish priests, rest next to each other in the Dunaszerdahely public cemetery. ; ; Vázsonyi was also an outstanding personality of the city, so much so that he was awarded the title of honorary citizen of Dunaszerdahely. He was one of the founders and publisher of the Christian social, cooperative and literary weekly newspaper Csallóköz. ; ; Previously, the two parishioners awaited the resurrection in metal coffins in the crypt of the Kriha-like Jesus Heart Chapel of the Újfalu cemetery.

“Here lies / His Excellency and Most Reverend / József Vázsonyi / parish priest, / knight of the Order of Francis Joseph / honorary citizen of Dunaszerdahely / surrounded by the great love of his faithful / and the public esteem of his fellow citizens / he worked in this place for 21 years. / Born 1847.Dec.2. Died 1923.May1.”
