The resting place of István Valko, a World War I hero

Cemeteries, tombstones, grave sites

István Valko gave his life for his Hungarian homeland at the age of 21. His symbolic grave is probably located in the city's public cemetery. ; On July 16, 1916, the following news was published in the Rozsnyói Híradó: ; The post office brought news of the death of a child-faced man who still had a long life ahead of him, whose return home was awaited by a widowed mother every evening. Now the mother has no hope that the "cherished favorite of the regiment" will return home. Heroes' reward: he also received a simple wooden cross as a class ration, and his relatives who stayed home were left with a heavy feeling of sorrow and the memory of a kind and good son. ; The mother, who was in deep mourning, received the following letter from the regimental command: ; "Szatmárnémeti, July 12, 1916. ; With deep sorrowful sadness and heart-rending pain, I inform Your Majesty that our regiment's cherished favorite, excellent soldier, valiant warrior, medical officer István Valkó, owner of the silver medal for valor, died a heroic death on the field of honor, for the country. ; The entire regiment, officers and enlisted men, surround the freshly dug grave with a helpless despair that fills the heart and soul. ; His superiors mourn the dutiful, fearless soldier, the man on whom we could safely count as a whole man even in the most critical times. His vocation, his career was to heal the wounded and suffering, to alleviate pain, but his delicate soul could not look at the suffering without himself taking part in the suffering. The history of the regiment is eternal proclaims as glory his heroic deed above Krakow, when he charged and defeated the enemy with the wooden frames of the stretcher. ; His subordinates clung to him with all the warmth of their hearts, because he gave them his heart. The love of his comrades and fellow officers could only be described by the countless, hot tears that mourn him, that fall for him. ; His energy beyond his age, his manly unwavering endurance, his rock-solid resistance, his lovable personality, his manners made him one of the most valuable soldiers of the regiment. And now, due to a cursed grenade fragment, we have lost them all. ; I bring the condolences of the regiment to my Excellency. I bring the true, sincere tears, the warm condolences of the officers, comrades, and privates. ; I know well that there is no consolation for the loving mother's heart in its eternal pain, but Your Majesty must be consoled by eternal glory, that glorious laurel, which forever surrounds its heroic son. ; The regiment bows its flag before its great hero, the love of our hearts guards his grave. ; Please accept, My Excellency, the declaration of my distinguished, excellent esteem and true respect." ; With such a memory, heroes live forever! You will also live among us, Valkó Pista. God be with you!
