Chapel of the Passion of Our Lord

Building, structure

The mortuary chapel next to the Church of St. George is well known from Archbishop Batthyány's 1781 census. In 1781, the former observer saw a church surrounded by a brick wall and the old cemetery inside (i.e. the Szentfundus). Within the walls of the cemetery, he writes, there is a "public chapel for the dead", which is "built of good materials" (stone and wood), without a tower, and the sanctuary is separated from the nave. "Windows with iron bars" are visible, and there is also a choir made of wood. "This chapel is dedicated to the honor of the Passion of our Lord", the visitor continues, but "it is not known from whose donation it was built. There is an altar, which Mr. Ferenc Kondé had erected." Its income comes from Sunday and holiday masses, it has an altar stone, and is flanked by wooden benches on both sides. The small chapel, which served as a mortuary, has been used less since 1780, as burials in the “old cemetery” around the church have ceased. ; The former chapel was finally demolished in 1801 – interestingly, according to the descriptions, the workers also found a pot of money at the base of its wall.
