Tornala Town Hall

Building, structure

The idea of building a new town hall in Tornalja arose even before the First World War. Although the plans for the building were completed, they could not be realized due to the war. ; In the 1920s, the idea of building was returned to, and finally in 1925, a design competition was announced, which was won by Lajos Őry (Oelschläger) and his colleague, Zoltán Géza Boskó. This was one of the first major competitions for the two young architects, for which two alternative plans were submitted. One was awarded first place, the other third. Of these, the more restrained, more conservative third-place version was ultimately accepted by the city council. ; The building, which exudes tranquility, still bears classicist stylistic features. Several functions were placed in the two-story building. Its facade is divided into three risalites, with shop windows on the ground floor. The main facade was built with an arcaded entrance, with the first-floor balcony appearing as a canopy above the entrance. One of the most interesting details of the entrance is the cubist street lamp standing on four geometrically profiled artificial stone pedestals between the entrance arcades. The extensive building complex surrounds the inner courtyard on three sides. ; The building is characterized by particularly beautifully crafted details, such as the wrought-iron ornamental latticework or the unique design of the balcony railings. ; Construction began in 1926, during which part of the old town hall was demolished. In addition to the town council, the building complex also housed a café, a restaurant and a hotel. ; Based on the plans completed in 1925, the new Town Hall of Tornalja was built between 1926 and 1927.
