Memorial plaque of graphic artist, writer and ethnographer Kálmán Tichy
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
In August 2018, on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of his birth and 50th anniversary of his death, a series of events were held in Rožňava to commemorate Kálmán Tichy (1888-1968), a famous native of the city. He was a versatile personality, and although he was primarily known to the public as a painter and graphic artist, he was also an excellent museologist, local historian, teacher, publicist, literary figure, and photographer. As the director of the Rožňava City Museum, he made invaluable contributions to the foundation of the museum's operation and the expansion of its collection. In recognition of his work, in February 2018, Rožňava awarded the title of Honorary Citizen In Memoriam to one of the most prominent figures in the city's 20th-century cultural history, and 2018 was declared the Year of Kálmán Tichy. ; As part of the anniversary year, a series of lectures on the life and work of Kálmán Tichy began in the spring at the Rožňava Mining Museum, and on August 8, a memorial plaque was unveiled in honor of the former director on the museum's board building. Speeches were given at the ceremony by Pavol Burdiga, the mayor of the city, Ferenc Kardos, the president of the Rožňava Twin Cities Civic Association, and Pavol Lackanič, the director of the Rožňava Mining Museum, and Katarína Sekanová thanked the organizers on behalf of Kálmán Tichy's relatives. The memorial plaque is the work of the sculptor Árpád Mézes from Zselíz, and was wreathed by representatives of city organizations after the speeches. ; Kálmán Tichy was one of the most authentic and enthusiastic chroniclers of the well-known and lesser-known buildings, street details and picturesque corners of Rozsnyó in the early 20th century. However, he had to leave his beloved city due to persecution during the years of disenfranchisement that afflicted the Hungarians in Czechoslovakia after World War II. He lived in Budapest for twenty years, where he died in 1968, and was then laid to rest in the Rozsnyó cemetery. Many, many decades had to pass before posterity could make amends a little, at least symbolically honor and welcome Kálmán Tichy, and make his name and the role he played in the cultural life of Rozsnyó known to the wider public. ; As part of the commemorative year, an exhibition entitled "The Life and Work of Kálmán Tichy" opened in the Gallery of the Mining Museum in Rožňava in September, and in October an international conference was held to pay tribute to his memory.
