Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Rožňava
Building, structure
The Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the most valuable sacral building in the city of Roznájov. The Gothic building, dating from the 14th century, was completed in 1403. It was originally used as a plenary church, and from 1776 it became an episcopal cathedral. It was badly damaged by the Hussites. In 1514-16, it was renovated thanks to the generosity of Cardinal Tamás Bakócz, whose name the Holy Cross Chapel bears. Around 1550, the church was occupied by the Evangelicals. It was only returned to the Catholics in 1670. From 1682 to 1687, it belonged to the Protestants again under Thököly. Its separate tower was erected during the establishment of the bishopric. In 1777, the church was redecorated and the Bakócz Chapel was rebuilt. The bishops of Rožňany - up to Schopper - were laid to rest in the tomb under the sacristy of the cathedral. In one of the side chapels of the church, the remains of Saint Netus are placed, which the bishopric received as a gift from the Pope of Rome during the time of Bishop Kollartsik. A valuable panel painting from 1513 has survived in the church, which depicts Saint Anne with her third body and is known as the Rožňany Metercia. In the background of the painting, various stages of the miners' work are depicted, from the measurement of the mine to the transportation of the ore. The painting is the oldest graphic depiction of mining in Central Europe at that time. ; A new altar was built in 1937 - the Carrara marble statue on the altar of the Heart of Jesus was made from a fragment of the Fadrusz-style Maria Theresa monument destroyed in Bratislava.
