Szojka Gate, Székely Gate

The memorial gate of the great fire that destroyed the city and its victims. The Szojka Gate is a Székely gate, the only monument that survived the fire of 1795. Almost everything in the city burned down, only the walls of the churches remained, miraculously, a little charred, but the gate also survived. The Latin inscription "I burned, I burned, but I did not burn..." reminds us of the event. A copy was erected in 1996 in the park next to the Reformed church, not far from its former location, in front of the house at Fő utca 33. The original gate is located in the courtyard of the Museum of Eastern Slovakia in Košice.
