Sculpture Park in Somorja
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
In the early 1990s, a few young music lovers from Somorja had the idea of a place in the city where they could gather and remember the greats of music by lighting candles. They started looking for a suitable place, and enthusiastically approached the city leaders, who at first found the idea strange. However, seeing their determination, they suggested the location of the old gendarmerie barracks for their implementation, which was then untidy and overgrown with thick bushes near the bus stop. ; The young team, together with the city, began the great work of tidying up the park that was already intended for renovation. The plans for the arrangement of the area were prepared by Tamás Jávorka. With the help of Lajos Presinszky, the team founded a civic association called Immortal, which has been operating continuously ever since. The reliefs of the great figures of the music world were imagined on rocks erected in the park, which were obtained from the Bratislava quarry. A collection was organized for the implementation, and the amount raised proved to be enough for the initial work. The city took on the costs of paving the park and building sidewalks. ; The first Freddie Mercury relief was created by the artist Boris Mintchev, which was later replaced with a work by Oskar Košecký with his consent. He was the one who created the subsequent reliefs with great enthusiasm, as he himself was a music lover like the boys. ; Thus, the statues of Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix and Bon Scott were placed in the sculpture park, which is unique in Europe, alongside Freddie Mercury. Sometimes you can still see candles burning in front of them.
