Siznyai House
Building, structure
After the Hellenbach House, there is a small alley, and then we stand in front of the Szitnyai House. This is also a 16th century building, and at the turn of the century it belonged to the famous and learned mayor of Selmec, József Szitnyai. However, this place is much more famous for its pub called “Zum goldenen Grubenlicht” (To the Golden Mine Light), which was on the ground floor of the building. The dimly lit but always loud pub, run by Flórián Steltz for almost 55 years, was a regular haunt of the bursch. It sacrificed its world and became similar to other bourgeois houses in the 1890s. However, the figure of Flóri, who also gave “auf” (loan), still lives in the songs of Selmec: “Hold, your blattod is strange, apricot, / One eye is a czar, the other is a chaser ... / Has Flóris’ wine harmed you? / Be ashamed of yourself, you old comrade!”
