Spišská Sombat Bell Tower
Building, structure
The houses and most important public buildings of the richest citizens of the rich Saxon (zipszer) town of Spišské Székesfehérvár are located on the main square, which still retains its unified medieval-early modern appearance. One of these is the bell tower belonging to the 13th-century parish church of St. George, built together with its cinquefoil wall, yet separate. ; The tower was built under the direction of the master mason Ulrich Matern from Keszmárk, in 1588-89, in the Renaissance style. During this period, many similar, separate bell towers were built in Spišské Székesfehérvár, several of which were also created by master Ulrich. Among them, the one in Spišské Székesfehérvár is considered one of the largest. The tower was rebuilt between 1668-1697, and then it was necessary again after the fire of 1775. It last underwent careful monument renovation in 2001. ; The walls of the bell level of the square-based, closed, squat, high tower are pierced by 3 windows in all four directions. The tower houses four valuable bells. The oldest was cast in Igló in the middle of the 14th century, the others date from 1511, 1564, and 1719.
