Holy Trinity Parish Church

Building, structure

"Today's late Baroque Roman Catholic church was built in 1797 in honor of the Holy Trinity. ... Two marble tablets in Ipolyvarbó also remind us of the lord who built the church. One can be seen above the main entrance of the church, and the other was placed in the sanctuary in memory of Szentiványi by his grandson, Sándor Szentiványi, in 1897, the 100th anniversary of the church's existence. ; The church's builder, Ferenc Szentiványi, rests in the crypt under the church. ; The church with a single tower and a semicircular sanctuary is oriented north-south. Its altarpiece depicts the Holy Trinity, in a different form from the usual one. The Father with the Holy Spirit is seen above the dead Jesus surrounded by angels. The ceiling fresco of the sanctuary depicts the Annunciation, as the angel Gábor appears to the praying Virgin Mary. The corners of the fresco are decorated with the images of the four evangelists in the usual animal and with angel symbols. The original fresco depicted the baptism. Under the triumphal arch, on the right side, a statue of the Heart of Jesus was placed. Jesus is seen in a crimson robe, with wounds on his hands and a halo on his head. On the right side stands a statue of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. ... The statues of the church are also unique works: the individual saints are depicted differently from the usual ones. The side altars of the nave were erected in honor of the Immaculate Virgin Mary and the Mater Dolorosa. The pieta of the latter also differs from the usual depictions of similar statues: here the Sorrowful Virgin is in a robe and red dress, with a pierced dagger on her left above her heart. She does not hold Jesus in her lap: she embraces the dead man under his head with her right arm, at his shoulder, and holds Jesus' arm with her left. On the wall behind the altar, a wooden cross decorated with a white shroud, and below it, the Holy Sepulchre can be seen - of course, only on certain days of Holy Week - with the statue of the dead Jesus. The large frescoes of the nave depict the Last Supper and the Assumption of Mary into heaven. The smaller wall frescoes depict some of the Hungarian saints, such as King Saint Stephen, Prince Saint Imre, Saint Elizabeth and Saint Margaret. The statue of Little Saint Teresa was also placed in the nave, but here you can find Saint Joseph with the Baby Jesus and a lily in his hand, Saint Francis of Assisi in a monk's habit tied with a three-knot belt, with his hands outstretched. There is also a statue of Saint Anthony, who holds the Baby Jesus on his prayer book and has a lily in his left hand. The child Jesus is seen here in unusual clothing: small star-like shapes can be seen on a beautiful yellow robe. The statue that immortalizes Jesus before Pilate is also very beautiful. The Lourdes Grotto is also located in the church, with the Virgin Mary and Saint Bernadette in it. It used to be a side altar of Saint Anthony and the Heart of Jesus to the church. The painting that is now in the parish church probably stood on the latter side altar. ... most of the furnishings in the church have been preserved. ... for example, the pews in the nave and the wooden pulpit, the marble baptismal font with the wooden cabinet. ... the old confessional, the series of station pictures in oak frames. But the processional banners were not left out either."

Inscription/symbol:

The memorial inscription engraved on a marble stone in the Deak language on the facade of the church contains the following in Hungarian: For the glory of the entire Holy Trinity, with the help of Her Majesty Maria Theresa, Ferencz Szent Iványi, Royal Prothonotary and Royal Councilor, Lord Governor of Sáros County and Treasurer of Hungary, erected it out of charity in the year 1797. (The text of the plaque erected in honor of the church builder in the sanctuary of the church.)
