St. Wendel Church, Keszegfalva
Building, structure
The history of the village from an ecclesiastical point of view dates back to 1763. The oldest Latin record, written by the then pastor György Laczkovics, dates back to this year. The records also show that the first church in Keszegfalva was built in 1756, and the first pastor living here was sent here in 1763. ; Between 1756 and 1763, the parish was probably administered by Franciscan monks from Komárom. This can also be concluded because the first Latin record also shows that a Franciscan monk (p. Ferenc Szaliczky) was present at the consecration of the first church. So the first permanent pastor came here in 1763. ; The first church and the parish stood on the banks of the Váh River, much lower than the current one. In the first church, the image of the main altar depicted the Holy Trinity and Saint Vendel. However, this first church had to be demolished around 1826-27 due to the river water and a new one had to be built on the site where the current one stands. ; The second church was consecrated on December 15, 1828. The water of the Váh also damaged the parish and therefore it was also demolished in 1833. From then on, the parish priest lived in a rented house until the current parish building came into the ownership of the church in 1846-47 and became the parish building. ; On February 24, 1867, the structure of the church and its six beams above the choir fell off, crushing the organ and the entire choir. After the incident, there was no church in Keszegfalva for three years, until on May 24, 1869, the construction of the new church began, which was completed on July 16, 1870 and consecrated a few days later on July 24 by the district deacon, Alajos Miklosovich, parish priest of Gúta. After that, the necessary things were continuously made for the church, such as the organ, and later the benches. From a historical point of view, it may be very uplifting for the locals that on August 10, 1879, the statue of the Blessed Virgin of Lourdes was consecrated by Gyula Meszlényi, then parish priest of Komárom, later bishop of Szatmár. ; The church was repaired several times after that, always according to what was needed. As for the image on the church's main altar, in addition to Saint Vendel, it also depicted the Holy Trinity and Saint John. In 1897, however, the then parish priest Aladár Schuster had a new altarpiece made, which was painted by the Budapest painter Mihály Szobonya. The altarpiece was consecrated on May 23, 1897. The altarpiece depicts Saint Wendel, who is covered with a cloak and wearing sandals. A bag and a flask hang from his side and a rosary can be seen on his belt. His hands are clasped on his chest, in which he holds his shepherd's staff. Cows and lambs can be seen around him.
