Statue of Saint Wendelin
Sacral small monument
The statue of Saint Wendel from 1882 stands at the crossroads that turns into the Nagyszombat road in the former main square of Senec. The statue was renovated and rededicated in 2011. ; Saint Wendel (German: Wendelin, Latin: Wendelinus or Wendalinus), (c. 554 – 617) was a hermit and abbot. ; His earliest biographies were published after 1417 and contain the following story: he was a Scottish prince, but secretly left the royal court and went on a pilgrimage to Rome. On his way back, he settled in a small cottage near Westrich and earned his living by begging. When a landowner reprimanded him for his inactivity, he became a shepherd. Later, a miracle persuaded his landlord to allow Wendel to return to the hermit's lifestyle. The news of his holy lifestyle spread. Many farmers came to him to bless their sick livestock. He was eventually elected abbot of the monastery of Thole and ordained a priest. A small chapel was built over his grave, and the town of St. Wendel later grew up around it. ; Shepherds venerate him as their patron saint. His feast day is October 20.
