Chapel of St. Wendel or Chapel of the Queen of the Rosary

Building, structure

“Along the main road, now sandwiched between buildings, stands the Queen of the Rosary Chapel. It was probably built at the beginning of the 19th century with two rectangular, slightly semicircular windows and a pyramid-shaped bell tower surrounded by two buttresses. Under the small bell tower, a pointed arched window can be seen, and below it a tympanum. In the middle of the wooden altar of the chapel, decorated with columned edges, stands the Queen of the Rosary image, with two kneeling angels next to it, and in front of it a small framed image of the Heart of Jesus and the Heart of Mary. This text can be read on the black marble tablet placed on the inner wall of the chapel (The Chapel of the Virgin Mary was renovated in 1997 by the municipal office. Mother of God, protect us.) … Let us note here that this sacred place was called the Holy It is presented as the Vendel Chapel, and is also referred to as such in Mikszáth literature. Incidentally, the writer himself wrote a lot about Saint Vendel. In his short story The Black Spot, for example, we can read that the wall of Olej's house was decorated with the image of “the heavenly gateway of the shepherds, Saint Vendel”. Then he wrote about the statue of Saint Vendel erected near the sour well, and also about the Vendel Chapel. We can read about this in the work The Pranks of Kálmán Krúdy and in the short story Where Did Magda Gál Go? In the latter, for example: “They didn’t even feel sorry for the meadow anymore, they also helped Saint Wendelin, carving on it: ‘Having had it built at the expense of this Saint Bodok, although I am now in the Majornok border from a chapel and everything, I will nevertheless take care of the Bodok border’, but the well, that is, the newly raised demand, caused great fear in the village.” Whatever the case, Saint Wendelin also had a great cult in this region.”
