Holy Guardian Angels Roman Catholic Church, Nagyölved

Building, structure

The first known parish priest from the time of re-Catholicization, György Rudnay, "found the church neglected in 1701, without a roof, on a hill where the village had been before." (Zalka 1954), as reported by Archdeacon János Ferenc Jezerniczky. Although it was dedicated to All Saints' Day, Saint Ladislaus' Day was still celebrated. The parish was restored in 1715 during the stay of parish priest János Ivanics. Due to the large-scale impact of the Counter-Reformation, conversions increased with the actions of parish priest György Szalay. During his time, Prince-Primate Count Imre Esterházy had the new church built in 1735, about 50 meters from the old one. The church cracked dangerously during the earthquake in 1763, which was repaired with iron ties 11 years later. The bells were blessed in 1770. In 1798, there were already four altars: ; 1. the main altar with the current image, above it the statue of the angel St. Michael ; 2. the altar of St. John of Nepomuk ; 3. the altar of St. Joseph ; 4. the altar of Our Lady of Sorrows ; There was a tower clock on the tower facade facing the village. In 1838, the church burned down, and the bells purchased in different years fell and burned down. The tower clock was also destroyed. The damage was repaired, and in 1899, the parish priest Dr. Ferenc Koperniczky had the side aisles expanded. At that time, the sacristy was also built. In 1891, the roof of the right-hand side aisle collapsed. When this was repaired, the entire shingle roof was renovated. Between 1896 and 1899, the altars of St. Joseph and St. John of Nepomuk were replaced with new ones. They probably suffered irreparable damage during the fire. The altar of the Sacred Heart was built instead of the latter. In 1903, a huge fire devastated the village again, which did not spare the church either. It caused great damage especially to the roof structure. Three of the bells made in 1840 were taken away to be melted down in 1917, and the fourth cracked. There are currently four bells in the tower. One each from 1920 and 1921, and two from 1938. The latter two were cast from public donations by the faithful during the parishionership of Dr. Gusztáv Pécsi. In 1951, the church was renovated under the direction of parishioner János Zalka. The frescoes visible today were added to the walls in 2003, under the direction of parishioner István Nemcsok, during the work of the church painter Dr. Peter Csambal from Nagyszombat. The church in Nagyölved is dedicated to the Guardian Angels. It was built in Baroque style. The height of the tower is 25 m. The pulpit and the Stations of the Cross in the church date back to the second half of the 18th century.
