St. Nicholas Church

Building, structure

The third church of the Roman Catholic Church of Nagymegyer. The foundation stone was laid on February 8, 1899. The church was built by Princess Adalheidis-Sabran Pontevés of Köröspatak Kálnoki from Csíssó. It was consecrated in a festive setting on October 28, 1900. Its furnishings were designed after its construction. Its most important element is the main altar, which is made of oak, dark brown in design, with gilded decoration. On both sides of the altar are statues of Saint Stephen and Saint Ladislaus carved from walnut. The colorful mosaic window above the main altar depicts the patron saint of the church, Saint Nicholas, and the Virgin Mary with the child. The church has 45 finely crafted oak pews, plastered dark. The round windows of the church display images of Hungarian saints in mosaic. The choir houses the 14-stop organ, which was made in the workshop of Ottó Rieger in Budapest. It was consecrated in 1911 and renovated in 1999. The church has five bells. The oldest was cast in 1773. The largest bell is called the Wéber bell, made in 1936, and weighs 885 kg. The interior of the church was renovated in 1930, 1979, and 2003.
