St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church
Building, structure
The Roman Catholic church of Zsére, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, was built in 1939, replacing the earlier church built in 1734 in the Baroque style. ; The church is a single-nave building with a polygonal sanctuary. Two semicircular side chapels are attached to the nave, and two sacristies are also attached to the sanctuary. The high tower is asymmetrically located on the southern corner of the western facade. A low vestibule was built in front of the northern facade, on the smooth roof of which a cross was placed, and later a sculpture of the heart of Jesus was placed, which was donated to the church by Leó Kupecsek. The tower is covered by a tent roof. The ceiling of the nave and the sanctuary is plain reinforced concrete, with a coffered design, while that of the side chapels is semicircular. These ceilings are decorated with frescoes by the church painter Ferenc Szórád, who was originally from Zsére (1970). The stone arcade is above the entrance. On the main altar there is a painting of Bishop St. Nicholas by the aforementioned master (1939). On the sides there are sculptures of the Heart of Jesus and the Heart of Mary. In the left side chapel there is the Pieta, below which is the Holy Sepulchre. In the right side chapel there is the altar of St. Teresa, on the sides there are sculptures of St. Joseph and the Virgin Mary. In the nave there is a statue of the Virgin Mary with the Child, St. Francis, St. Joseph, St. Thaddeus, and the Virgin Mary of Lourdes. The multi-colored reliefs of the 14 Stations of the Cross, placed in carved frames, date from 1939. The wooden cross with the multi-colored crucifix dates from the beginning of the last century. The pulpit is decorated with a relief called Jesus with the Lamb. There are seven processional flags in the church. The marble holy water tanks have survived to us from the time of the construction of the Baroque church. The organ in the gallery was made by the Važanský company from Nitra. The statues of the Heart of Jesus and the Heart of Mary in the gallery are taken out in procession on the day of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The picture in the vestibule depicts Saint Anthony with the child in his lap, distributing bread to beggars, and the statue of Saint Aloysius can also be seen here.
