Statue of Saint Nicholas in Nagysombat

Statue, monument, memorial plaque

In front of the St. Nicholas Cathedral in Nagyszombat, there are large statues of two bishops, St. Adalbert and St. Nicholas. Between 1543 and 1820, Nagyszombat was the seat of the Diocese of Esztergom. During this period, the cathedral functioned as the "main church" of the diocese. ; St. Nicholas stands on the pedestal in episcopal vestments. He raises his right hand in blessing, and in his left he holds a book on which three "balls" can be seen. The "balls" remind one of an event in the legend of the saint. An impoverished father had trouble getting his three daughters married off properly. In order to help them, Nicholas threw three golden balls (in another version: three purses full of gold) through the window of their house. ; The inscription on the pedestal provides information about the time of the installation: ; "SOLI DEO ; SANCTORUM ; ANNO DMNI MDCCCV" ; (God alone is holy - in the year of the Lord 1805); The statue originally stood at the city gate, and was moved to its current location in 1847.
