St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church

Building, structure

According to the archdiocese of Esztergom, the parish church of Szentmihályfa has existed since 1050, but this is not supported by a document. The fact that it is an old parish church is attested by the land register and the document of 1390. Initially, the village was owned by the Bratislava castle estate, the first known landlord, Master Péter Orros, who left it to his wife Ilona in his will before his pilgrimage in 1332, and to his daughter Margit as a dowry. In 1337, Marcellus paid 50 marks to his daughter Ilona, who was the widow of the former Bratislava vice-governor Péter Orros, son of Gergely Zalai, but now the wife of Belez's brother, László, Master Morochuk, a Polish princely soldier, as a dowry and a dowry. In 1355, the Bereg ispán Master Morochuk left the Szentmihály estate to his widow when he died. In the 1533 portal census, he is listed as Ignác Farkas with 7 ports and Péter Kéméndy with 6 ports. Later, the village became Illésházy, then the Batthyány and Pongrácz estates. At the beginning of the 20th century, Count Frigyes Pongrácz and Mór Katona had larger estates here. At that time, the village already had its own post office and railway station, but its telegraph station was Dióspatony. In 1940, Csécsénypatony was annexed to Szentmihályfa, and this remained the case until 1960, when Csécsénypatony was annexed to Lőgérpatony. ; The Roman Catholic Gothic church was built in the second half of the 14th century. In a previously unpublished document from 1423 (in the Kondé family archives), one of its parishioners is also mentioned: Gallus plebanus Ecclesiae de Szent-Mihályfa. According to this, it is certain that a parish church existed here in the 14th century, and perhaps even long before that, but this cannot serve as a certainty for the fact that it was founded in 1050. The church was transformed in the 15th century and classicized in 1787. In its interior, the nave is covered by a Prussian barrel vault made in 1787, and its polygonal sanctuary and sacristy are covered by a Gothic cross vault. Its southern Gothic portal dates from the end of the 15th century. Its main altar is late Baroque, its pulpit is Baroque-Classical, both from around 1790. Its early Renaissance baptismal font dates from 1538. The patron saint of the church is St. Michael the Archangel. The walls of the church are decorated with medieval frescoes depicting parts of the legend of St. Ladislaus, which were found under the plaster a few years ago. ; In the churchyard there is a crucifix made in 1657, which was renovated in 1898, in addition, there is a statue of St. Wendel from the second third of the 19th century and a statue of St. John of Nepomuk from 1838.
