St. Martin's Church

Building, structure

The Roman Catholic St. Martin's Church was built in 1824 in the classicist style. ; … The church's polygonal sanctuary with a flat ceiling is therefore much larger than the sanctuaries of the surrounding churches. The extraordinary size also refers to the original, medieval church function. However, during the recent renovations, this space has also changed significantly. The original altar has disappeared, the statues of the Heart of Jesus and the Heart of Mary, as well as the two kneeling angels, have been removed. … The church's large (2m x 3m) altarpiece depicts the patron saint, St. Martin. Martin is sitting on a white horse in military uniform and is tearing open his cloak with his sword to give one half of it to the naked beggar standing next to him. In the upper part of the oil painting, Martin is depicted as a bishop in the clouds of the sky. … In the early 1930s, the well-known Rozsnyó church painter, Gyula Ádám, beautifully painted the Kőkeszii church, as well as the Nagycsalomja church. The ceiling of the sanctuary was decorated with a fresco of the Last Supper with the inscription: “Oh Jesus, in the Most Holy Eucharist, have mercy on us!” ... The ornate tin coat of arms of the Lamb of God was added to the triumphal arch closing the sanctuary in 1933. During the repainting in 1998, an allegorical pelican was added with the inscription: “The pelican gives its life for its own.” ... The ceiling of the nave is decorated with the fresco entitled Jesus with the little ones, which was also painted by Gyula Ádám together with the images of the four evangelists. Above the southern portal, there was once a mural entitled Jesus on the Mount of Olives. The southern main entrance is Romanesque in style, but in 1993 a small vestibule was built in front of it. The benches were made in 1992 by the master carpenter from Sirak, Imre Tóth. The pulpit, the tabernacle, the confessional, the Lourdes grotto and the Holy Sepulchre were also his creations. The station pictures were made in 1993 by individual families in the village. ... The church also has a Lourdes side altar, a Lourdes grotto and a statue of Mary of Lourdes. These depict the Virgin Mary in the usual way and with the usual props. ... The bell tower was once a separate building. It fits asymmetrically into the nave. Its tower windows are loophole-like formations that widen inwards. Its southern door is a more recent creation, built in the old Eastern Gothic style from carved stones.
