Roman Catholic church built in honor of deacon and veteran Saint Lawrence

Few written documents have survived about the Roman Catholic church in Felsoszel, built in honor of Saint Lawrence. In a document from 1271, King Stephen V approved the donation letter of Géza II to the Church of Saint Emerámus in Nitra. The document also mentions the church, which was built at the beginning of the 12th century, but more likely in the 11th century. In 1524, a late Gothic church dedicated to Saint Lawrence was built on the right side of the Dudvág, and the cemetery is nearby. After a short time, the church became the property of Elek Thurzó, but around 1620 Miklós Eszterházy confiscated it and gave it to the Catholics. The house of God changed hands several times, until finally, according to the decision of the “Sopron Session”, the church returned to the Catholics. The war events greatly damaged the small church, so it was demolished in 1770. The foundations of the church were still visible in the 19th century. The construction of the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Lawrence the Deacon began in the classicist style, based on the plans of Jakab Fellner. The works were completed in 1775. It was built by Chancellor Ferenc Esterházy. The bell cast in 1401 was brought from the old church. In 1823, the church burned down, and the roof was only restored to its original condition in 1967. The church suffered serious damage during the martial law of 1944–45, but was repaired within a short time. The sanctuary of the single-nave building ends polygonally, with a tower above the facade and an attached sacristy. The gable of the church is bordered by wall strips and semicircular window frames. The straight gable of the main facade has a spiral-shaped decoration with a pointed roof structure. In the sanctuary, the Prussian-domed vault is located on the towers of the group of columns, which can also be found in the nave. The interior of the church is decorated with murals by local painter Jenő Bedecs, painted in 1970.
