St. Ladislaus Church in Szeten

Building, structure

The Hungarian village of Árpád-era origin had a parish church before 1332, which was probably destroyed in the early modern period. Some people suspect its location on today's Cemetery Hill, around the funeral parlor, from where debris was found under the ground. According to other opinions, the medieval and modern church were located at the same place. The location of the stone-built, shingle-roofed, circular-plan church of Szete mentioned in the 1697 church visitation record is also problematic. (According to some opinions, this may be the same as the sanctuary of today's church, but the final word can only be given after research.) ; Today's church was built in 1737, in Baroque style, in honor of King Saint Ladislaus. The single-nave, northwest-southeast axis, gabled roof, today covered with metal sheeting, has a semicircular sanctuary in the northwest, while its Baroque helm tower is on the southeast, street facade. ; The nave of the church has a Prussian vault, while the sanctuary has a cross vault. Its furnishings mostly date from the first half of the 20th century. Its high altar was made by the Selmecbánya master József Krausze, sometime between 1909-23. The large oil painting depicting Saint Ladislaus included in it is an original Baroque work. In various places in the church, as well as on the painted windows of the sanctuary, we can find depictions of numerous Hungarian saints. ; The church was completely renovated in the late 1990s as a result of local cooperation. At that time, the wooden statues that had previously stood in two decorative niches on the street facade were moved inside the church, depicting the two sisters of Saint Elizabeth of the Árpád dynasty, Blessed Kinga and Jolán. (In their place are now the more recent statues of Saint Andrew and Benedict in the niches on the facade.) ; The description is based on the work of Károly Csáky: Szakrális emlékeink nyóbán I., (Dunaszerdahely, 2008.).
